Rules & Regulations

 

 

Article 1 - The Premio Roma Danza 2018 XVI Edition International Choreographic Competition

 

 

The International Choreographic Competition Premio Roma Danza 2018, XVI Edition - is organized and presented by Italy’s National Academy of Dance in Rome. In 2018, the year that coincides with the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the National Dance Academy, a new section dedicated to video-dance will be inaugurated with a specific prize.

An artistic committee, nominated by the director of the National Dance Academy will have the task of following through with all the phases of the competition.

 

Article 2 – Mission

The principal objective of the competition is to promote new choreographic talent in the areas of live performance and of video-dance. The intention of the competition is to support choreographers involved in choreographic research and offer opportunities into production and distribution.

The competition is open to choreographers of any nationality. In order to qualify, choreographers must be 18 years of age or older on or before 30 Maggio, 2018.

 

Article 3 – Competition Structure

a) Live Performance Choreography

The competition is structured as follows:

 

            •            Preliminary Selection Phase – the selection of participants, which occurs through video selection

            •            Registration of competitors and technical rehearsals at the National Academy of Dance in Rome, 8 and 9 July, 2018

            •            Semifinals,  9 and 10 July, 2018

            •            Finals  11July, 2018

            •            Awards Ceremony and Winners’ Gala  12 July, 2018

 

The competitors will be divided into two groups for the phases of the competition. The artistic committee will comunicate to the candidates the placement in one of the two groups by May 30th, 2018

b) Video-Dance

The competition is structured as follows:

Preliminary Selection Phase – the selection of Semi-finalists, which occurs through a selection of the full length video of the maximum duration of 3 minutes

Registration of the competitors 10 July, 2018

Semi-finals, finals and awards  11 and 12 July, 2018 – Teatro Ruskaja

 

Article 4 – Characteristics of Choreographic Submissions

The choreography must be original, i.e., created and produced by the Candidate or Candidates (in case of multiple authors).

The choreography may be created by more than one choreographer; in such cases, any awards will be equally divided between the authors of the work.

The choreography may be freely inspired in any choreographic category or style and must be accompanied by a synopsis which presents the theme, intent and applied technologies.

The maximum duration for group works and duets is ten (10) minutes.

The maximum duration for solos is four (4) minutes.

Winners and runners-up from past editions of the Premio Roma Danza - International Choreographic Competition may participate with a different choreographic work from that which was awarded a main prize in the past edition.

 

For video-dance submissions the maximum duration is three (3) minutes. The video may be freely inspired by the different comunicative forms of dance through audio-visual technologies.

A synopsis is requested which presents the theme, intent and applied technologies.

 

Article 5 – The Jury

The Jury is composed of seven (7) members, including the President, who are nominated by the Director of the National Academy of Dance, in consultation with the Artistic Committee.

Jury members are selected from among dance personalities of international renown.

The Jury is tasked with selecting the choreographic works presented during the Semi- finals and Finals, and will select the winners of the competition (1st, 2nd and 3rd Prizes and Special Prizes). The Jury will also participate in the Award Ceremony Gala Evening.

The Jury will work towards its incontrovertible judgments according to specified regulations which define its operating procedures.

The decisions of the Jury are irrevocable.

Candidates and their representatives may not solicit further justification or explanations from Jury members, as regards their decision(s).

For the entire duration of its work, the Jury will be accompanied by a Secretary appointed by the Director of the Dance Academy.

Article 6 – Selection Commission

The elimination phase will be carried out by the artistic committee nominated by the Director of the National Dance Academy.

The Selection Commission is tasked with reviewing each video submission and selecting those works which will pass to the Semi-final round.

The Commission will carry out this selection with consideration to the following aspects: Concept – Structure – Choreographic language – Dynamics – Communicative capacity of the work.

 

Article 7 – The Prizes

The Jury, in its incontrovertible judgement, will award the following Official Prizes:

            •            1st Prize: € 6,000 (Six-thousand Euros)

            •            2nd Prize: € 3,500 (Three-thousand five hundred  Euros)

            •            3rd Prize: € 2,500 (Two-thousand five hundred Euros) 

 

For the section Video-Dance only one prize will be awarded of €4,000 (four-thousand Euros)

In addition, a number of Special Prizes will be awarded.

 

Article 8 – Selection Procedures

The initial Elimination Phase takes place through video submissions, which must depict the entire choreographic work entered in the competition. The submission may be a video recording of rehearsal or performance, however must, in any case, be of good quality. This phase will be conducted by the aforementioned Commission (Art. 6).

Successive phases of the Competition – Semi-finals, Finals and Award Ceremony Gala Evening – will take place in the presence of the Jury at the Academy’s open-air Teatro Grande (Grand Theatre), the technical capacities of which are indicated in the technical rider, which will be available for download on the Competition’s website.

For video-dance elimination phase takes place la selection of the finished video product.

 

Article 9 – Technical Aspects

Music used in the Competition may be performed live or reproduced in electronic form (CD). Compensation as regards musical author’s rights / royalties may not exceed the minimum standards established by the Italian SIAE for the current year.

Choreographers may necessarily be required to adapt certain aspects of their works, in order to conform with the specific technical capacities and limitations of the Academy’s outdoor theatre Teatro Grande.

Please note that for choreography presented live on stage video projections are not possible.

Each candidate is invited to submit a clear technical description of the work, with respective lighting plan. Candidates selected for the Semi-finals may involve their own lighting/technical person in the performance; however the Stage Manager is responsible for overall technical direction of each work performed, in agreement with the Director of the National Academy of Dance and the Artistic Committee.

Decisions of the Stage Manager are final.

At the time of registration (8 and 9 July) the competitors must deliver their music in the form of CD or USB in two (2) copies for recorded music: each CD or USB must contain only the musical piece relative to the competition. On each CD or USB must be clearly marked the candidates’ name and title of choreography.

Any music sent through e-mail or hyperlinks will not be accepted.

 

Technical rehearsals for choreographers selected for the Competition, see article 3, will be held according to the rehearsal plan which will be comunicated.

The duration of each rehearsal slot will be defined by the Technical Direction, in coordination with the Artistic Committee, however may not exceed thirty (30) minutes.

The working plan containing the schedule of warm-up classes, rehearsals and performance times will be established in due course by the artistic and organising staff, in its incontrovertible judgment, and will be communicated to choreographers and/or their chosen representatives at the moment of registration.

It is obligatory to strictly observe the working schedule of studio and stage rehearsals, performance times and the order of presentation, as defined by Technical Direction on its incontrovertible authority, or risk elimination from the Competition.

For reasons of force majeure, the Technical Direction reserves the right to modify the working schedules at any time, as it considers necessary.

In the case of television filming, modifications and lighting adjustments may be required for technical or production purposes.

 

Article 10 – Registration Fees

The registration fee for the Choreography Selection Phase (live performance or video.dance) is €120 (one-hundred and twenty Euros).

Students regularly enrolled at the National Academy of Dance in the academic year 2017/18 may register for all phases of the Premio Roma Danza 2018 – International Choreographic Competition by submitting one single payment of €50 (fifty Euros)

The registration fee for the Selection Phase must be paid by bank transfer not later than 30 April 2018 to:

The name or description of transaction for this first instalment should read:

The receipt from the respective bank confirming payment is evidence of registration. Registration fees are not refundable.

 

Article 11 – Documentation necessary for participation in the Premio Roma Danza 2018  – International Choreographic Competition

To register for the Selection Phase:

  • Registration form (available on the Competition website) correctly filled in and signed, including personal data, telephone numbers and e-mail address; the name and contact details of the representative to which the organisation may address all correspondence; information relative to the artistic project and the technical description; all declarations and authorizations related to treatment of personal information, choreographic and music/author rights, audio/video recording and television broadcast of the performance, etc.

  • Declaration that the choreographic work submitted is an original creation made by the applicant-choreographer(s), the performance of which therefore requires no third party consent;

            •            Curriculum vitae (resumé) of the applicant-choreographer(s);

            •            One passport photo of the applicant-choreographer(s);

            •            Photocopy or scan of the applicant-choreographer’s

                         passport or identity card;

            •            Personal data of each performer;

            •            Medical certificate of healthy constitution for each performer;

            •            In the case of under-age (minor) performers,

                         authorization of their parents (attach form);

            •            Copy of the bank or postal receipt confirming payment of the

                         € 120 Selection phase (first round) registration fee required

                         for entry to the Competition.

Videos may be sent to the Competition e-mail address or posted on youtube or Vimeo. Any passwords necessary to view the video online must be provided with registration. Online viewing or download must be possible [i.e. check that the link functions].

Registration may be effected either online or by regular post.

Both the application and the video or relative video link and password (You Tube or Vimeo) must arrive at the National Academy of Dance on or before 30 April, 2018.

Candidates will receive notification upon receipt of their application(s).

Article 12 – Receipt of Registration

The organisation Premio Roma Danza will not take into consideration applications received without complete documentation as specified in Article 11 of the present regulations, and the same applies to applications not sent or received within the dates indicated in Article 11.

Applicant-choreographers will receive notification attesting receipt of their respective application requests.

Application requests will be protocoled in chronological order of receipt. The order of exhibition for the Semi-finals and Finals will be determined by the Artistic Committee and Technical Direction of the Premio Roma Danza 2018.

Registered competitors are requested to inform the Premio Roma Danza Secretary as soon as possible in the case of renouncement.

 

Article 13 – Costs Incurred

All expenses incurred for travel, lodging and meals are on the charge of the Applicant- choreographer and/or participants. For participants the Academy will provide information about conventions for lodging and meals.

 

Article 14 – Permissions, Authorisations and Insurance

The Applicant-choreographer declares the truthfulness of every act and declaration of legal and professional nature and assumes all civic and penal responsibility for the same.

The organisation Premio Roma Danza declines any and all responsibility for eventual damages to persons or property provoked or caused by the Candidate and/or by performers of the respective choreographic works, including damages and/or injuries sustained to the same and/or others. Choreographers and performers of choreographic works admitted to the Competition are responsible, at their own cost, for the stipulation of insurance policy coverage for said choreographers and performers, relative to rehearsals and performance. It is declared that the insurance policy of the National Academy of Dance covers only civil responsibility toward third parties for damages caused by structural anomalies at the institution.

Minors intending to perform may do so solely after presentation of the relative authorisations, as specified in Article 11, point 7 of the present regulations, and subject to the conditions required by relevant Italian law(s).

As specified in Article 11, point 1 of the present Regulations, choreographers, performers and technical and administrative staff of each competing group authorize the recording, use and broadcast of audio, video and photographic images taken during the performance presented.

Candidates must also be available for interviews and other activities of informational, promotional and/or documentary nature.

 

Article 15 – Privacy

The National Academy of Dance and the Artistic Committee of the organisation Premio Roma Danza is committed to handling participants' personal information according to Italian laws regarding the protection of privacy and the applicable regulations, in accordance with Dlgs 30.06.2003 n. 196:

In accordance with D. Lgs no. 196 of 30.06.2003 (the Italian law regarding the protection of personal data), which foresees the guardianship by persons and entities in respect to personal data, the National Academy of Dance informs that such guardianship will be marked by the principles of correctness, legality, transparency and respect for the rights of participants in the Competition. In accordance with Art. 13 of the indicated law, it is stated that personal data furnished will be collected and treated in accordance with the legal norms, for use connected to the activities of the institution, in particular to the fulfillment of all activities connected to the realization of the various phases of the Competition itself, which is the subject of these Rules and regulations.

Article 16 – Acceptance of the Regulatory Norms

The presentation of the application request constitutes full acceptance of all the rules and regulations of the present announcement and obliges full compliance with the same.

Article 17 –Incontrovertibility

The procedures of the organizing staff and Artistic Committee and the judgments and decisions of the Jury and Selection Commission are incontrovertible.

Article 18 – Disputes and Jurisdiction

In case of dispute, the text of the original Italian version of this document will be effective. Jurisdiction for any legal disputes resides with the Court of the city of Rome.
