THE NATIONAL DANCE ACADEMY of Rome
An Institution for formation and specialization in dance education and choreography.
The National Dance Academy of Rome (AND) is the only Institute in Italy authorized from the State to release academic diplomas in dance education (either classical and contemporary technique) and choreography. Due to this uniqueness AND creates projects of didactical research in dance education beginning from children’s education until 1st an 2nd level academic courses up to Masters in order to achieve a critical knowledge on the latest contemporary dance issues. In these years AND promotes an international political strategy tuned with European programs for an inclusive growth of its students and a program of permanent education.
In order to accomplish up to date requests coming from the work context, AND is elaborating new curriculum to satisfy the students’ exigencies towards new professions. In addition to this AND encourages its students formation through promoting a wider knowledge of different cultures, amplifying its curriculum of studies and acting as link of exchange between northern Europe and the Mediterranean countries.
AND’s aim is to become a European center of excellence for research and experimentation in new artistic forms referring to dance and cultural integration exchanges to increase the level of experience and competence of its students.
AND is the Dance Department in the AFAM system (High Formation in Art, Music and dance). It is structured in four Schools, each one enabled to organize Bachelor courses and Master courses, specializing courses, doctorates of research, all releasing academic diplomas equivalent to the university level.
This structure facilitates programming and controlling the didactic quality of the courses and its results. Each School Council monitors and coordinates its courses providing didactical and artistic projects, plus new options according to the different specializations requested. A particular attention is given to the application of the research results within its own competences.

1st level Academic Diploma in Ballet
This Course aims to develop skills in ballet technique and repertoire with practical and theoretic studies in these two subjects including other disciplines referred to dance such as art, history, music. This Course ensures a high quality formation either for a professional carrier as a classical dancer or to continue the study in the 2nd level Courses.

1st level Academic Diploma in Contemporary Dance
This course aims to respond to the different exigencies put by the new global cultural context of communication forms. The Course gives the opportunity to learn a minimum of two forms of contemporary dance technique and repertory, improvisation and composition with the use of new technologies. During the three year program there is the reconstruction of a choreography from the historical contemporary dance repertory referring to those schools that lead the research in technique and aesthetic in the international dance context such as Limon, Graham, Cunningham, Nikolais, Louis.. For this reason students can achieve a good level of professional formation in order to continue their studies in the didactics of dance or choreography.

1st level Academic Diploma in dance Composition
This Course is addressed to those who want to develop the scenic practice and dance composition through both classical and contemporary technique.
In addition to this the recognition of credits for whom has had a professional dance career in theatres or companies makes this course a good opportunity to enlarge their theoretical competence to achieve a diploma that enables them to specialize their capabilities in the 2nd level Academic Courses.

2nd level Academic Course for Ballet Education
This course offers the necessary competences to become a classical ballet teacher with the knowledge of character and historical dances, ballet repertoire, alignment and postural techniques, all skills which are required by public and private schools of different levels, by theatres or other various cultural and social context in which dance plays a primary role. The wide offer of practical applications of dance education is sustained by disciplines such as dance methodology, didactic and programming projects, music for dance, anatomy applied to dance and dance education.

2nd level Academic Course for Contemporary Dance Education
This Course offers the students the opportunity to gain the proper competency to teach the activity of contemporary dance technique and repertoire for public and private schools, theatres and different cultural and social context where dance is requested. Through the study of characterizing subjects such as technical laboratories, American and European contemporary dance repertory, and other optional subjects concerning the new tendencies of contemporary dance choreography, the students accomplish knowledge by studying different styles and achieve technical skills and aesthetic knowledge about contemporary dance performances.

2nd level Academic course in Dance Composition
This Course aims to offer practical and theoretical competence in dance composition, choreography, including mèse en scene of dance projects with the support of new technologies, video dances and computer life forms. The program is characterized by theoretical disciplines such as aesthetic and anthropology of contemporary dance combined with laboratories of structural analysis, performance development and other practical activities that fuse dance with music, dramaturgy and video direction.
The programs of 1st and 2nd level academic Courses combine practical and theoretic subjects, laboratories and coaching. The evaluation of the competence achieved by the students is determined by exams organized in three sessions per year, including other forms of evaluation directly done by the teachers at the end of the semester (laboratories). A large choice of optional subjects allows the students to personalize their curriculum according to one’s vocation and talent.
The final Diploma (either 1st and 2nd) is obtained by the student after presenting a final work or thesis about a personal research within the field studied, that is a synthesis of technical, aesthetical and scientific competences achieved.
PRE-ACADEMIC COURSES
AND offers also a pre-academic course for students still attending the 1st and 2nd level of secondary school with an eight year program at the end of which students obtain a certificate of competency achieved in order to be admitted to the 1st level Academic Courses of high formation.
